You can break the Lemon Catching world record at the Purley Food & Drink Festival

A weird and wonderful Guinness World Record attempt where people will be challenged to catch as many lemons as possible in a minute while blindfolded is going to be held in Purley. After a successful inaugural event last year, the Purley Food and Drink Festival is returning next month with am unusual challenge for people attending to take part in.

Dexter’s Burgers, Crafty Beers, Blacks Burgers, Coughlan’s and even Tesco, will be offering their best food and drink at the event on Purley High Street on Saturday, June 3.

But what makes it stand out from other food festivals is that there will be the chance for people in attendance to become a world record holder, by catching as many lemons as possible thrown at them from three metres away while wearing a blindfold.

Simon Crips, CEO of Purley BID – organiser of the festival – said: “The way it works is you have teams of two that stand three metres apart from each other.

“One throws the lemons and the catcher is blindfolded. They try to catch as many as many lemons as possible in 30 or 60 seconds.”

There is a junior, women’s and open section and the best of each will make it to the final, where there will be a cash prize.

There are plenty of free activities for children too, including sand art, balloon modelling and a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Visitors will also have a chance to go on a smoothie making bike.

“It’s a great family-friendly event, which brings local businesses, large and small, and the community together. We encourage everyone to come and enjoy the best Purley has to offer,” said Mr Crips.

The event itself, which takes place from 12 until 5pm, is free and so are all activities for children are free.

Last year the event was supported by more than 20 food and drinks businesses and it was attended by an estimated 3,000 people.

There will also be a full programme of entertainment during the day, including headline band Stealing Signs, the Endurance Steel Orchestra, Bolly Street Kids dance group, singer Chloe Ray and DJ AmyB and DJ Bon Bonny.
