A historic post office in Purley is to reopen its doors tomorrow morning after it was rescued by a television presenter and her husband.

Laura Hamilton, best known for presenting Channel 4’s A Place In The Sun, and her husband Alex Goward, who was born in Purley and went to the Whitgift School, revealed in December that they had plans to renovate The Lord Roberts on the Green.

It will open to the public on Monday (April 10) morning at 8am.

The couple, who have lived on the Webb Estate for the last three years, bought the village shop and post office after it closed in August and shortly before Christmas they held a community event at the store in Upper Woodcote Village where they shared their plans for the site.

Laura and Alex announced they would be reopening the post office branch as well as converting part of the store into a new deli and café.

In a statement on the Lord Roberts’ website, the couple said: “Lord Roberts on The Green will open its doors on Monday, April 10 at 8am.

“We have worked extremely hard in a short space of time to create something we hope the community will love.

“The post office is up and running, our shelves are now fully stocked with some wonderful produce and we will be offering the daily papers.

“In addition to this we will also be selling our own branded tea towels, luxury scented candles, jute bags, bone China mugs, bowls, aprons and a cream tea by post.

“The project has certainly been a major one.

“Planning permission for our conservatory was only passed a few weeks ago, so the extension to the shop will not be operational until April 22.

“Until then we are able to cater for 20 people on the patio and up to 14 in the coffee shop itself.”
