URGENT – LET THE COUNCIL KNOW YOUR VIEW ON THE LIBRARY SERVICE

A low key, under publicised council consultation on the future of the borough’s libraries ends on May 2. It would seem that the council wish to downgrade the library service and convert existing libraries into community spaces – and thus doing away with all or most of the professional library staff.

Ostensibly the council wants to find out what people want from their public libraries.  However, it was clear from the questions being asked that they are sounding out the likelihood of attracting volunteers to replace professional staff.  The questions also strongly suggest that the council’s thinking is to move away from the traditional model of public libraries to community spaces.  Did residents consider libraries become more of a place to shop and eat, for instance?
